About this Work

Steinberg’s depiction of architectural elements, rendered in Art Deco–influenced abstraction, creates a futuristic setting. Simple line-rendering of the stairs, shaded decor details, and triptych-like decorative elements above the bar hold loosely together to construct a fictive space, possibly a theater or factory, for the two figures. Standing in a comical (albeit confrontational) way, a scrawny cowgirl and a soldier with a combat helmet like a polished bullet represent two of the “urban terrorist” types who began to populate Steinberg’s art in the late 1960s.
