About this Work

Two versions of the Statue of Liberty, both nude yet rendered with very different textures, are stepping along stones rising from a body of water. Steinberg often worked in a variety of styles within the same image, exploring the expressive possibilities of different graphic modes. The figure on the left is drawn with thin, clear lines while the other is in Steinberg’s “TV style,” which appropriates the pattern of horizontal lines characteristic of imperfect reception on old cathode ray televisions. It is possible that the right figure is meant to be the shadow of the first, following behind her. Along the bottom, the piece includes some of Steinberg’s fake-document elements.
