About this Work

Allegories of Abundance, Liberty, Justice, and War march from right to left with militant uniformity. The repeated lines, which recede into the background, suggest that each character is but one in an infinite line, marching in perfect sync. This work is part of a series of parade drawings with reiterative figures, all iconic types, some of which were published in The New Yorker on May 25, 1968. The march is concluded by a question mark, quietly asking: “What is this all for?” But the question goes unanswered, unseen by the other figures in their relentless procession forward.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
