About this Work

Steinberg often liked to depict art about art. In this piece, he represents a collector of modern art using Art Deco and Cubist elements. The art collector stands in the lower left viewing various art objects in the room, including some Cubist sculptures. In addition, Steinberg includes three of his own stamps in the piece with the two on the back wall suggesting artworks hanging in the man’s collection. The frieze-like blue and red decorative elements above them are made with stencils, a style that Steinberg added to his graphic repertoire around 1965.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
