A contemporary photorealist, Mary Reilly is noted for her soft tonal effects and devotion to drawing, which she creates by using pencil and graphite powder manipulated through a reductive process of erasure. This work highlights the often overlooked small plants and minutiae found all around us, instead of meditating on the big picture of the universe. Working in New York City—a so-called concrete jungle—Reilly sought to showcase isolated spots of nature found in all five boroughs. Without any indication of a broader urban setting, these simple grasses have the grandeur of skyscrapers.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
