About this Work

Rockwell Kent worked as an architectural draftsman, printmaker, illustrator, and painter (not to mention lobsterman, ship carpenter, and dairy farmer). His unique print style was inspired by nineteenth-century English illustrators, including William Blake, Aubrey Beardsley, and Thomas Bewick. Although his works are generally classified as social realism, many carry strong symbolic connotations. A solitary human figure can suggest deep metaphysical concepts, such as man's place in the universe. Kent once said, "I believe in Man as the supreme consciousness; and in the arts as the supreme expression of his spirit."
