About this Work

Iriyama comes from a family of lacquer artists, but rather than follow traditional motifs and techiniques, he refines, reworks and reimagines the art form using a brush as well as carving to execute designs into the lacquer matrix. The character on this tea house plaque is "raku" meaning fun.
