About this Work

Alex Katz is recognized as a leading member of the new American realists, who re-embraced figurative art in the 1960s when Abstract Expressionism was the predominant style. Although representational, Katz’s work captures an abstracted stylization that recalls modern artists like Paul Cezanne and Juan Gris, as well as the cartoon-like simplicity of some of his Pop art contemporaries. His drawings often served as preparatory designs for his large, colorful paintings and graphic work. This image is a study for a 1971 print of the same title (seen in reverse).

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
