About this Work

Standing tall, Christ visibly appears to steel himself against the blows of the whip and the jeers of his tormentors following his betrayal and arrest. The grimace on his face betrays both pain and anger but no outward signs of fear. Made in the 1490s while Dürer worked on Apocalypse, The Flagellation was one of his first Passion prints. These early woodcuts share a similarly theatrical sensibility, crowded with figures and almost clamorous in their wealth of detail. They also share a distinct preoccupation with the spectacle of bodies under duress. Christ’s physicality becomes a defining feature of the woodcuts throughout Dürer’s Large Passion.
