About this Work

Lucas Cranach the Elder served as the court painter to Frederick the Wise of Saxony in Wittenberg (two Saxon shields appear on either side of the central column). He became a close friend of the reformer Martin Luther and later published his Protestant pamphlets and new German translation of the Bible.
