About this Work

Well known for her paintings depicting her Dreamtime stories, Mary Morton was a senior woman among the community at Utopia, and responsible for the initiation of young women. Not surpringly she was also passionate about maintaining and passing along traditional practices. Mary started her artistic career in the late 1970s working along with a group of other Alyawarr and Anmatyerr women on batik. Batik is the decorating of cloth by applying hot wax as a resistance to dye. In the late 1980s she moved to acrylic on canvas as well as wooden sculptures.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
