About this Work

Although Andy Warhol is often associated with images of celebrities derived from popular culture, he also utilized historical sources. Some of his portraits reflected societal changes of the late 1960s and early 1970s. His portrait of the nineteenth-century Sioux Chief Sitting Bull, based on an archival photograph, followed the rise of the Red Power (American Indian) Movement. It was intended for his series "Cowboys and Indians," but was not included at the last minute and replaced with another image.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
