About this Work

Although Andy Warhol is often associated with images of celebrities derived from popular culture, he also utilized historical sources. Some of his portraits reflected societal changes of the late 1960s and early 1970s. His series of reigning queens–all who obtained power in their own right, rather than by marriage—coincided with the Women’s Liberation Movement and the battle over ratification of the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment).

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
