About this Work

The Pop artist Andy Warhol embraced popular culture and commercialism, once stating that "big-time art is big-time money." To seemingly illustrate this point, he produced a series of paintings of dollar signs (the American symbol for cash) for a show at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1981. In order to further market this idea, Warhol created prints like this one that could be sold more cheaply to an even larger audience. While the images were made in many color variations, the green of this work suggests the color of paper money.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
