About this Work

Although Andy Warhol is often associated with images of celebrities derived from popular culture, he also utilized historical sources. His portrait of the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) is based on the head from a 1787 painting by Johann Tischbein. Warhol may have been drawn to this subject because of Goethe’s early writings on the psychological effects of color.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
