About this Work

The Surrealist artist Salvador Dali included playful personifications of the sun and the cycles of the moon in one of ten prints that he did related to flowers. For the images upon which the prints were based, he painted over eighteenth- or nineteenth-century botanical prints with symbolism related to the plants. Depending on the variety, water lilies open and close their flowers each day, either during the daylight hours or at night. Dali also included a crescent moon-headed skeleton holding a cartouche with his name, as well as favorite personal motifs like the ant and a horse and rider. Another similar print in the series focuses more on the solar imagery.
