About this Work

Compositions such as this one belong to a catagory of Asian painting called "Bird and Flower," which is a tradition that dates to the eighth century in China. During the Tang Dynasty (CE 618-907), Chinese painters became specialists in certain types of painting, such as figural, animal, or landscape painting. When they acheived reccognition for their skill, they were rewarded with court rank.

The Japanese adopted and, in some cases, adapted, Chinese painting subject matter and techniques.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
