About this Work

This clay vessel has an overlay of reed and fiber in a crisscross pattern. The open-work design of the fiber allows parts of the clay to remain visible. The addition of reed and fiber to the exterior of the clay pot shows how people have incorporated basketry with other mediums like clay. This aspect of the design may have provided additional structural support to facilitate the intended use of the pot.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
