About this Work

Although Emilio Sanchez was unable to return to his homeland after the revolution, he continued to identify with his Cuban heritage. He revisited images of the island's colorful vernacular architecture until the end of his life, working from memory, old photographs, and his travels to other Caribbean locales.

One of his favorite motifs was a view of a landscape through an open doorway with a stained-glass transom. His pristine depictions of the buildings suggest an idealized-- perhaps wistful--image of a lost past, rather than reality.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
