About this Work

Along with architecture, Emilio Sanchez was fascinated with the effects of weather. In this striking grisaille (black, white, and gray) composition, Sanchez directs our gaze upward to a ring of clouds encircling the moon. The straight, black silhouettes of skyscrapers provide a counterpoint to the organic forms of the clouds, suggesting that
we must look to the skies in order to find nature in a densely built city.
