About this Work

Trained as a commercial artist, San Antonio-based Chuck Ramirez worked in the advertising industry, including designing ads for grocery stores. When he decided to pursue a fine arts career, he used his skills as a studio photographer and food stylist to create super-realistic “portraits” of objects related to consumerism and waste. Some of the items, such as food, also suggest the importance of things as markers of cultural identity. Lengua (beef tongue) and ground beef are traditional ingredients in classic Tex-Mex cuisine, such as tacos and burritos.

Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art’s collection also includes another work from this series, Ground Chuck (Eskenazi Museum of Art 2010.89).

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
