About this Work

Here Giambattista Tiepolo recorded a gentleman of uncertain disposition. His status is affirmed by his wig, tricorne hat, and fine coat. He also sports a large, expensive muff, which only emphasizes his diminutive stature. His frowning face—with upturned nose and lips firmly pressed together—suggests we are observing a man who has seen something of which he disapproves, or someone who is inherently critical.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
