About this Work

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo made hundreds of caricatures of the men he encountered each day in Venice. Here he recorded a stout man in later middle age, either a worker who has earned enough to afford some personal comforts, including a muff, or a gentleman who did not bother to don elegant attire when he left the house. The cap on the man’s head was a style customarily worn by both working men (outdoors) and gentlemen (only at home after removing their wigs).

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
