About this Work

A noted orator, Saint Anthony famously preached to the fishes when his human audience failed to listen. Here Domenico Tiepolo drew the moment after the saint, identified by his halo, turns from the disbelievers to address the fish. Anthony’s oratory has just begun, and the fish have not yet surfaced. Domenico contrasts Saint Anthony’s active stance with the bored-looking heretics.
