About this Work

The Mangbetu and the closely related Barambo used beautifully decorated vessels, such as this water bottle for the storage of a variety of liquids in addition to water, such as oil, beer, and wine. These vessels were owned by the elite members of society, as well as being sold to European visitors during the 20th century.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
