About this Work

Although metaphysical ideas are central to Pavel Tchelitchew's work, religious narratives are not. The likely explanation for this work rests in the artist's identification with the subject. Saint Sebastian had historically been revered as the patron saint of archers and victims of the plague, but beginning in the nineteenth century he took on a new role as the protector of men with homosexual inclinations. As an openly gay artist, Tchelitchew frequently depicted the beauty of the male form in his drawings--as a dancer, acrobat, sailor, or martyr.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
