About this Work

The man's shirt and the woman's necklace indicate that the sitters are Bozo, a Mande-speaking group living along the Niger and traditionally recognized for their skill in fishing. The radio belongs to the clients; beginning in 1977, a year after its introduction in the United States, the boom box became enormously popular throughout Mali. Sitou incorporated paper flowers into the scene as a decorative element. They are a common feature in portraits of couples, women, children, and to a lesser degree, young men.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
