About this Work

This woman likely commissioned her portrait, which prominently features her newly painted henna design, to commemorate a wedding or one of the Islamic religious holidays. The letters incorporated within the pattern probably represent her and her husband's initials. Sitou's oeuvre includes a number of similarly composed photographs, in which a woman is elegantly positioned with the palm of one hand resting against her cheek.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
