About this Work

A photography of a seated man with his left knee raised and his left arm resting on that knee, while his right hand sits on his right leg. The embroidery on this man's gown, his woven cap, and metallic watch, indicates that he is a wealthy Maraka man, probably a trader. The pyramidal composition and low camera angle - together with the sitter's grandiose form, frontal pose, and direct gaze - create a spatially and visually commanding image.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
