About this Work

In Mopti during the early 1980s, "Chuck Taylor All Star" athletic shoes by Converse were associated with boxing, a wildly popular sport, and became some of the most fashionable footwear for young men. Elevated on a platform in this image, the man's similarly styled shoes became focal points representing his modern, urban sensibility. That attitude is further expressed by his posture, expression, and equally trendy attire, which includes corduroy jeans, sunglasses, a knitted cap, and a wristwatch. In contrast, the child wears traditional indigo-dyed clothing.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
