About this Work

Here a Fulani woman, dressed for a special occasion, displays gold, silver, and beaded jewelry, a wristwatch, and a henna design on her left hand. The calabash on the floor is filled with fresh milk. Selling fresh milk is a common enterprise among Fulani women, a source of personal pride that this sitter chose to include in her portrait.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
