About this Work

When photographing children, such as this little Songhai girl, Sitou would tell them to "watch the dove" - referring to the white light of the camera's flash - as a means of keeping them still and engaged, with their eyes wide open. This braided hairstyle has been worn by girls in Mali for centuries and never seems to go out of style.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
