About this Work

When this portrait was made, it was uncommon for men to wear shirts or to leave their shirts unbuttoned in this manner. Together with the sunglasses, confident stance, and Craven A cigarettes (a popular brand in Mopti in those days), they suggest that the subject is a trendsetting young kamalenba, playboy, expressing his personal style and independent attitude.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
