About this Work

Yoshida is known for his beautiful landscape prints that effectively evoke a time of day or atmospheric condition. Although originally trained as a painter in the Western tradition, Yoshida turned to printmaking in his forties and established his own print studio in 1925. To bring his art to a wider audience and generate sales, Yoshida traveled to the United States, where he was so successful he was able to finance his way home to Japan by way of Euprope and the Middle East.

This print is one of seventeen prints that were based on sketches Yoshida Hiroshi made while on his third trip to the United States and Europe. There are two versions of this print: morning and evening.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
