About this Work

Sidibé often captured his subjects while they were dancing at youth culture club parties. During the 1960s and 1970s, young people frequently visited his studio see who had attended events he photographed. Thus, Bamako’s youth gained status by being at those gatherings and by having their photographs taken by him.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
