[3] Rosenberg obtained an exclusive contract with Picasso and served as his dealer from 1918 until 1940. The painting likely entered Rosenberg's possession just after its completion in 1937; it was on display at Galerie Paul Rosenberg in 1939 (per invoice dated August 1, 1944, II.C.22, The Paul Rosenberg Archives, a Gift of Elaine and Alexandre Rosenberg, The Museum of Modern Art Archives, New York).
