In 2008, Brenneman was awarded the prestigious Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government for leading a three-year collaboration of exhibition and exchange programs between the High Museum and the Musée du Louvre. Prior to his role at the High, Brenneman was the Assistant Curator of Paintings at the Yale Center for British Arts in New Haven, Connecticut.
