About this Work

The ivory castanet was one of a pair and the hand-shaped clappers were used together as a musical instrument. Castanets like this were used as accompaniment to music and dancing in community gatherings. They could have been placed in a grave for the enjoyment of the deceased in the afterlife.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
