About this Work

This drawing is one of Giambattista Tiepolo’s early experiments with theme and variation, in this instance focused on the Flight into Egypt. Here Joseph guides Mary, with the Christ child in her arms, through a rugged landscape suggested by three windswept trees. The family’s donkey appears reluctant to make the descent to the river but Joseph’s tight grip will overcome the animal’s hesitation, and we know the donkey will ultimately follow.
