About this Work

Self-taught painter Louis Hayet met the Neo-Impressionists Paul Signac and Georges Seurat in the mid-1880s and adopted their Pointillist technique. He exhibited only once with them, however, at the 1889 Salon des artistes indépendants, before withdrawing from the group in the early 1890s. A student of color theory, he spent his later years writing artistic treatises and designing stage sets.
Hayet painted this pointillist street scene while still affiliated with the Neo-Impressionists. The looseness of the brushwork creates a tension between the solid objects and the ephemeral sunlight.
